Harris County Commissioner Adrian Garcia tests positive for COVID, isolating with mild symptoms

Harris County Commissioner Adrian Garcia has tested positive for coronavirus and is isolating at home with mild symptoms, his office said Sunday afternoon. Garcia, 61, will be working a limited schedule while recovering, his spokesperson Scott Spiegel said Sunday. The Precinct 2 Democrat, who is vaccinated and has received his booster shot, is expected to virtually attend Commissioners Court on Tuesday, Spiegel said.

It was unclear Sunday when the former Harris County sheriff contracted the virus or where he was exposed. Parts of Garcia's district, which spans eastern Harris County, North Houston and suburbs such as Friendswood, have seen increased levels of COVID-19 in recent weeks, according to wastewater tracking. Running as a criminal justice reformer, the former Houston police officer and city councilman defeated Republican incumbent Jack Morman in 2018 to become Precinct 2 commissioner.
