Exxon Mobil to exit Irving headquarters for Houston-area megacampus

Oil giant Exxon Mobil Corp. will exit its Irving headquarters and relocate its top executives and corporate staff to its megacampus in the Houston area. Exxon announced the relocation Monday as part of a larger restructuring of its business lines. The sprawling 385-acre campus in Spring contains about 20 buildings housing more than 10,000 Exxon employees. Its sits to the west of Interstate 45 at the intersection with the Hardy Toll Road, about 25 miles from downtown Houston. The move is expected to be completed mid-2023, Exxon’s announcement said.

“We greatly value our long history in Irving and appreciate the strong ties we have developed in the North Texas community,” chairman and CEO Darren Woods said in a statement. “Closer collaboration and the new streamlined business model will enable the company to grow shareholder value and position ExxonMobil for success through the energy transition.” About 250 Exxon employees work in Irving, including the company’s top executives, said spokeswoman Erin McGrath. The company offered relocation benefits in hopes of retaining as many employees as possible and enabling their move to the Houston area. The relocation isn’t expected to result in significant job reductions, McGrath said. Exxon made a big splash when it announced its move in 1989 from Manhattan to Irving’s Las Colinas, the 12,000-acre development of offices, shopping centers and luxury homes. Around 300 corporate jobs relocated to North Texas at the time.
