Kelby Hagar: I’m conservative, but I had to sign the Harvard Law alumni petition against Ted Cruz
(Kelby Hagar is president of Argonaut Private Equity and a 1995 graduate of Harvard Law School.) Dear Ted,
An online petition of Harvard Law School alumni is circulating to admonish you for using your position as a U.S. senator to object to the certification of electors for Joe Biden and Kamala Harris. At last count, over 400 of your fellow law school alumni have signed the letter. They are right to do so, as the position you are espousing is short of facts, logically incorrect, and dangerous beyond all measure.
I have joined the petition. However, my unique position in our joint history at Harvard Law causes me to also write this letter to you for two reasons:

1) because you might dismiss the petition as a ploy of liberal elites, and;
2) because the petition itself doesn’t go far enough in condemning your outrageous actions.
I know you very well, Ted. And I expect you will dismiss the petition as being signed by leftist liberals with whom you have had a mutual disrespect since well before I met you. But, I signed it, Ted, and I am not a left-wing liberal. You know me and my views quite well.
I was in your class at HLS — your small 30-person section, in fact. You and I are both from Texas and both strongly conservative. We both argued side-by-side on myriad issues raised by professors during the course of our first year studies. I encourage you to look at the list of signatories closely, Ted. It includes people you once claimed to respect, with whom you claimed to share a common philosophy.
We all signed the petition because you are callously stirring up discontent for our Republican institutions without providing material evidence of electoral impropriety. Your only argument for contesting the certification is discontentment itself, that voters distrust the system.
The only reason the general public distrusts the system is because its leaders — in particular, you and the other Donald Trump supporters — continue to bellow distrust from the rooftops.
