After THC ban passed the House on promises of compassionate use expansion, the Texas Senate guts proposal by Chairman King
Meantime, some of Patrick’s former brethren in conservative talk radio call his THC crackdown a shameful mistake that will embolden drug cartels
During the
emotional debate on banning THC in the Texas House, Lt. Gov.
Dan Patrick offered full-throated support for a robust expansion of the
compassionate use program as he pressed lawmakers in the lower chamber to
support his priority legislation to enact a full ban.
“I am in
full support of expanding the TCUP (compassionate use) program,” Patrick said
on social media as Rep. Tom Oliverson, arguing in favor of the ban on
the House floor, said much the same thing. “We will expand licenses and have
satellite locations for the first time for prescribed products from doctors for
our veterans and those in need.”
It was just
part of Patrick’s campaign to pressure House lawmakers that also included promises
of meetings on their unrelated bills if they voted “yes” and threats their
bills were dead if they voted “no.” Many of those promises were made through
emissaries he dispatched the night of the vote, per multiple sources. After the
House vote to crack down on THC, some of those stalled House Bills did indeed start
moving in the Senate.
But within
48 hours of Patrick getting their votes for what he wanted, the Texas Senate went
in another direction.
