Senators hear from parents of Camp Mystic victims

In a statement, parents, part of the Campaign for Camp Safety, call for “promoting priority bills HB1 and SB1 this session to ensure common-sense safety protocols become law NOW so that children attending camp are protected in ways our girls were not, starting next summer. These reforms can't wait and should never have come at such a high cost.”

Parents of the children who died at a Christian girls’ camp in the devastating July 4 floods advocated for a bill enhancing disaster preparedness requirements for youth camps and campgrounds in testimony before the Select Committee on Disaster Preparedness & Flooding.

They are part of the Campaign for Camp Safety, which formed following the floods and met with Speaker of the House Dustin Burrows and Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick earlier this summer.

Senate Bill 1 by committee chair Charles Perry would mandate camps establish emergency plans for natural disasters, prohibit camps from operating in designated floodplains and streamline procedures to notify families in case of emergencies.

They described happy, empowered young women excited to be at the nearly century old Camp Mystic. They call them “Heaven’s 27.”
