One man arrested after alleged threat on Democratic Texas lawmakers

The latest via KVUE TV in Austin:

A man has been arrested after the Texas Department of Public Safety identified a “credible threat” toward legislators attending Saturday’s “No Kings” protest at the Texas Capitol.

A DPS trooper arrested the suspect in La Grange, southeast of Austin, KVUE Senior Reporter Tony Plohetski confirmed. The threat is no longer considered active, a spokesperson for DPS said.

The Capitol and Capitol grounds were evacuated around 1 p.m. “out of an abundance of caution.” Just before 4 p.m., the Capitol grounds were reopened.

“DPS has a duty to protect the people and property of Texas and is continuously monitoring events occurring today and their impact on public safety across the state,” DPS said. “DPS will collaborate with all local, state and federal law enforcement partners to ensure the safety of our citizens and state property, as well as to protect individuals exercising their constitutional rights to assemble and free speech. As with any incident response, the department adjusts its operations, including personnel and resources, as needed to address potential and emerging threats.”

New York Times reports President Trump is pushing "ruthless" congressional redistricting special session in Texas

Meantime, there are reports the GOP members of Congress from Texas will again meet about this on Thursday

The NYT politics team puts some flesh on the bone about rumors we’ve heard in Austin for months:

President Trump’s political team is encouraging Republican leaders in Texas to examine how House district lines in the state could be redrawn ahead of next year’s midterm elections to try to save the party’s endangered majority, according to people in Texas and Washington who are familiar with the effort.

The push from Washington has unnerved some Texas Republicans, who worry that reworking the boundaries of Texas House seats to turn Democratic districts red by adding reliably Republican voters from neighboring Republican districts could backfire in an election that is already expected to favor Democrats. Rather than flip the Democratic districts, new lines could endanger incumbent Republicans.

But a person close to the president, who spoke on condition of anonymity because the person was not authorized to talk publicly, nevertheless urged a “ruthless” approach and said Mr. Trump would welcome any chance to pick up seats in the midterms. The president would pay close attention to those in his party who help or hurt that effort, the person warned.

In municipal runoffs, overtly partisan candidates mostly underperformed

As elections go, this past weekend’s municipal runoffs didn’t result in any startling news compared to the first go-around in May, where firebrand conservatives on school boards and city councils saw big losses in Mansfield, Keller and Katy.

This time the results were mixed.
