Speaker Dade Phelan was in attendance Monday night at the Mexican
American Legislative Caucus’ annual gathering when retiring MALC Chair Victoria
Neave Criado took to the stage to deliver a bitter rebuke of Phelan’s
leadership.
As
she did that, the mood in the room shifted from festive to uneasy – the dinner
went from “mariachis to mayhem,” joked one person here – prompting at least
some lawmakers in attendance to later personally apologize to the speaker for
Neave Criado’s remarks.
