Lt. Gov. Patrick promises to direct federal money to unemployment insurance fund
“…my intent is not only to balance our budget, obviously, but I also want to take the first $6 billion that we get from the federal government and put it into truing up our unemployment insurance.”
Lt. Gov. Dan Patrick
told a leading state business group today he expects to use $6 billion in
federal funds to avoid a tax hike in unemployment insurance.
Recent rumblings
have suggested Texas was upside down in its unemployment insurance trust fund,
but the Texas Workforce Commission has been exceedingly vague
when asked directly about the shortfall and solution.
Today, Patrick was more
forthright in a conversation with the Texas Business Leadership Council,
saying he would prioritize unemployment insurance.
