Two thirds of Texas teachers have given serious thought to quitting this past year, survey finds
A survey of Texas AFT members out today
suggests two-thirds of teachers have given serious thought to leaving their
jobs in the past year.
Texas AFT has conducted two membership surveys: one last
November and another one in January. The latest survey, conducted in January,
indicated that only 12 percent of teachers felt safe on their school campuses,
with salary and workload being top stressors.
“Public schools are not only facing an immediate public
health crisis, they also are facing a potentially devastating staffing crisis
with more and more teachers and school staff being driven out of their jobs by
concerns for their safety, workloads that keep increasing and paychecks that
stay stagnant,” President Zeph Capo said on a Zoom call with media this
morning. “Frequently, it’s a combination of those things.”
