HK: Amidst many doubts among political pros, recent events suggest the more combative and disciplined Beto may have earned a second look

With fund raising coup and the incumbent’s rising negatives, Beto can counter Abbott TV ads; Beto’s “Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15,” may compete with Abbott’s, “We will end rape” or “It could have been worse” in Uvalde

Based on the tone of the two conventions, Republicans are angry and either sullen or waving fists or long guns in the air; Democrats are outraged but cheerfully upbeat. The four most contrasting things you saw at the State Democratic Convention last week were lots of young people, people of color, smiles and anti-covid masks. It’s a far cry from the GOP convention where there were gun raffles in the vendor exhibit hall, secession signs and people seriously talking about whether a woman who has an abortion should be convicted of a felony.

Yes, it was that stark.
