Taking only one shot at Cornyn, Sen. West launches US Senate bid in Dallas
West says he has the backing of 10 Texas Senators and 47 Texas House members; Ron Kirk says “It’s time to go West.”
DALLAS – To chants of “Go West,” Sen. Royce
West, D-Dallas, announced his campaign for the US Senate this
morning at a union hall in his district. The veteran Dallas County legislator
is the latest Democrat to join what’s becoming a crowded field to try to take
on Sen. John Cornyn.
“Unfortunately, I am not running for President
of the United States,” West joked as he opened his remarks to the predominantly
African American crowd gathered at the CWA hall.
Unlike M.J. Hegar of Round Rock, who lost
a tight race to Congressman John Carter in 2018, Houston City
Councilwoman Amanda Edwards and former Congressman Chris Bell of
Houston, West has the backing of the majority of the
party’s state legislators.
