SB: A rushed Texas House General Investigating hearing creates the chance for immunity from criminal prosecution for Speaker Bonnen

Under Texas law, “If a person testifies or produces a document while claiming that the testimony or document may incriminate him, the person may not be indicted or prosecuted for any transaction, matter, or thing about which the person truthfully testified or produced evidence.”

Some in the Capitol community were scratching their heads today about the quick scheduling of a Texas House General Investigating Committee after Vice Chair Nicole Collier, D-Fort Worth, requested a full probe into the June meeting between Speaker Dennis Bonnen and Empower Texans spokesman Michael Quinn Sullivan.

Rep. Collier said she wanted the panel to look into “the allegations relating to media credentials, as well as the circumstances and events surrounding a June 12, 2019 meeting, including any and all correspondence, statements and/or recordings related thereto."

All of that would presumably include Sullivan’s allegations of a quid pro quo offer by Bonnen and Burrows of House media credentials in exchange for the way PAC dollars would be spent to defeat incumbent Republicans on a “hit list.” Bonnen has denied the allegations. Burrows has been silent.

Committee Chairman Morgan Meyer was fast to respond to Rep. Collier.
