Rep. Stickland forges ahead with red light camera ban as Sen. Hall rethinks his compromise version
House Transportation Committee Chair Terry Canales says the bill needs work; law enforcement lands some blows with safety arguments
Rep. Jonathan Stickland told Gov. Greg Abbott Wednesday morning on the Texas
House floor that his proposed ban on red light cameras is progressing nicely
after a contentious hearing that featured anti-camera activists facing off with
local law enforcement.
The House
Transportation Committee’s hearing on HB 1631 lasted into Tuesday
evening as lawmakers listened to arguments for and against banning cities from
using red light camera technology.
The bill enjoys supermajority
support in the House, including the co-authorship of Transportation Chairman Terry Canales, D-Edinburg, who
acknowledged the legislation needs some work.
