Senators express unease with speed and scope of Harvey recovery
Governor’s $50 million check to Houston drew pointed questions, with some suggesting Abbott moved so quickly for H-town to fend off bad press
Several
senators in today’s meeting of the Texas Senate Finance Committee pressed
state officials to do more to speed up and enlarge the scope of Hurricane
Harvey recovery efforts, arguing in some cases that the continued
existence of entire towns are at stake.
The
focus of the senators’ questions varied greatly, reflecting in many cases the
differing impacts that the monster storm had on Texas.
Sen. Joan Huffman, R-Houston, expressed
exasperation, for instance, with the pace with which the U.S. Department of Housing and
Urban Development was formulating rules for distributing grant money to
people looking to rebuild their homes affected by floods.
