Could we see a real race for speaker
Rep. Phil King is a different kind of challenger but the internal politics of the House appear to remain firmly with Straus
With Rep. Phil King formally announcing his challenge to incumbent Speaker Joe Straus, the Texas political world
just got a lot more interesting. In many respects King has the same button
down, modulated, unflappable demeanor and self-confidence exhibited by the
incumbent.
And after all, the last potentially
serious challenge to an incumbent Speaker was then-Rep. Brian McCall challenging incumbent Tom Craddick, often described as tyrannical by even his own early
very conservative allies such as Robert Talton of Houston and Mike Krusee of Round Rock who ultimately
joined the resistance.
Straus has thus far had multiple challenges,
but none were serious.
