SENATE GOP CAUCUS RESPONDS TO CRUZ ATTACKS ON REPUBLICAN SENATE

Republican senators collateral damage as Cruz attacks presiding officer and therefore the actions of the Senate

Ted Cruz has made Lt. Governor David Dewhurst’s role as presiding officer of the Texas Senate the centerpiece of his campaign attacks.

Not surprisingly, he has put himself in the role of attacking the credibility of the Republican majority in the Senate. While not the focus of his attacks, the Texas Senators find themselves in the uncomfortable position of being collateral damage in the race to replace Senator Kay Bailey Hutchison.

Tonight, the Senate Republican Caucus spoke with one voice in an effort to rebut the broadsides launched by the Cruz campaign.

In their letter to Texans, the Republican Senators reminded voters that they passed a Sanctuary Cities bill in the special session because their rules allowed Democrats to block it in the Regular Session. They pointed out that Cruz attacks notwithstanding, they balanced the budget without raising taxes, they passed an anti-groping bill and have always opposed any form of state income tax, wage tax or payroll tax. They say, "Newspaper fact checks clearly confirm this."

The irony of the Cruz campaign is that David Dewhurst and Rick Perry have identical legislative records and that when he attacks the Dewhurst record in the Senate, he is also attacking the Governron and the Republican majority.
