Rep. Talarico begins push for insulin price cap bill in the Texas House
Similar legislation by Chair Kolkhorst already passed Senate
Pep. James Talarico,
D-Round Rock, unveiled House Bill 40, which caps insulin prices
at $50 a month, today. The bill is deeply personal to him, he said.
In 2018, the sophomore legislator almost died after a
campaign event where he walked the length of his district. Doctors diagnosed
him with diabetes after finding he was in diabetic ketoacidosis, which can be
fatal without insulin.
“Even with health insurance, I paid $684 for my first
30-day supply of insulin—the medicine I need to live. I had to put it on a
credit card,” said Talarico, who was joined by
Rep. Four Price, R-Amarillo. He doesn’t want
other Texans to have to do the same or go without it at all.
