Senators from both parties take aim at SOS voter data roll review

Senators Kel Seliger, Lois Koklhorst, and democrats say Whitley’s actions are concerning

Gov. Greg Abbott’s hand-picked Secretary of State David Whitley faced a litany of questions this morning from Senate Democrats both on and off the Senate Nominations Committee.

Every session seems to yield at least one controversial candidate for approval by the Texas Senate, and this session it is Whitley, who has only been on the job since mid-December but has managed to create a firestorm over his office’s voter list maintenance. His office identified 95,000 non-citizen Texans with a voter registration card, of which 56,000 had voted.

“We serve as a conduit of information between the counties and DPS,” Whitley told the senators, saying it would be counties that would determine who needed to be struck from the voter rolls. “The counties have access to information we simply do not.”
