HK: The backstory on DNC rejecting Houston national convention bid

A combination of national imperatives and Houston local politics undermined the effort; the city’s growth is slowing and fiscal reality forces clashes with the core political constituencies that have helped make Houston decisively blue

While disappointing, the Democratic National Committee decision to pick Milwaukee over Houston for its 2020 convention was not particularly surprising. Nevertheless, the flirtation was definitely tantalizing. 

Many of the Houston troops on the ground were skeptical from the get-go and wondered whether it was a good use of limited resources in an expensive effort. Perhaps intoxicated by headlining sports successes including a World Series win, hosting the Super Bowl and the Final Four combined with Houston’s reputation as the most diverse city in the country, Mayor Sylvester Turner nevertheless plowed forward.

But even in politics, reality has a way of working its way into these matters.
