Election officials urged to take cyberthreats seriously

“Don’t wait on your cybersecurity assessment. Don’t wait for policies and procedures….it’s like saying you’re not going to go to Weight Watchers until you lose 20 pounds.”

Melynn Huntley’s experience in Potter County last year is the best object lesson most election officials could have had at this past week’s state-sponsored seminar on election law.

Huntley faced any election administrator’s nightmare: a ransomware attack on her county’s computer system only days before early voting in last May’s election. She urged her fellow election administrators not to wait to complete the cybersecurity assessment now required under last session’s House Bill 1421.
