Cities and counties appear united against revenue cap proposals
The Senate appears to be fast-tracking the bill while there’s uncertainty in whether Democratic ranks will hold in the upper chamber
Counties and cities presented their expected objections
to revenue caps at a post-State of the State news conference
this afternoon, but it’s likely to take far more firepower to permanently
derail an effort to get property tax relief to the Senate floor.
School finance needs to be fixed first, because school
finance is the biggest part of tax bills – that’s the opening salvo from the local
taxing entities.
The state is limiting budgets that include unfunded, but
growing, mandates like county jails and indigent health care. And state
lawmakers talk a good game about supporting law enforcement until it’s time to
pay for police officer pay raises.
