Abbott calls for unity on property taxes while skeptics point out the legislation is written to divide local governments and members

“That’s the only way they know they can get the bill to the (Senate) floor…by dividing the members” with exemptions

In stark contrast to his State of the State address two years ago that included calls for cracking down on undocumented immigrants and rewriting the United States Constitution, Gov. Greg Abbott on Tuesday focused on the meat and the potatoes issues of property taxes and school finance reform as his top emergency items for this session of the Legislature.

Abbott’s formal remarks in the Texas House chamber came amid speculation that the Senate may try to move on property taxes as soon as this week while it is possible that both Senators Kel Seliger and Charles Schwertner may not be on the team with the current proposal.
