Sam Houston State defends its plan for a new medical school to address rural physician shortages
Chancellor McCall argues the proposal meets all the standards laid out by lawmakers; Commissioner Paredes argues there are weaknesses, including Sam Houston’s limited experience in doctoral level sciences
The Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board
will call a special meeting in the next two weeks to reconsider the Texas
State University System’s application for a medical school.
University officials appeared blindsided by a last-minute
decision of THECB staff on Thursday to forego recommending the medical school,
which would be located in Conroe and set to open in
2020.
