Racing Commission cuts $400,000 in positions to continue to meet its budget

“Bottom line, the agency’s funding mechanism is problematic as the regulated industry continues to face a significant decline and is looking to cut the Commission’s regulatory costs”

The Texas Racing Commission has trimmed another $400,000 from its budget request – mainly by trimming and combining positions – in order to stay afloat as a self-funded agency.

Last year alone, the Texas Racing Commission lost $690,000 in agency fees when three non-operating race track operators returned their licenses to the commission. Fees on the remaining tracks were adjusted to cover the loss, an even greater burden on an industry that has seen wagering drop from $633 million in 2000 to $287 million in 2017.
