Panel: While most debate centers on homeowners, property taxes fall heavily on Texas business
P Terry’s founder says “None of these numbers are going to put me out of business. I’m doing okay…but it’s the next guy who wants to be P Terry is going to have a harder road to plow. We’re shutting that guy down.”
Patrick Terry
of P Terry’s has a
successful hamburger franchise in Austin. But he also will pay a property tax
bill this year that’s increased 42 percent over last year’s total.
Terry was on a panel of business owners addressing the Texas Commission on Public School
Finance on Thursday this month. Most panels and commissions have
focused almost exclusively on homeowners.
But for every hit a homeowner takes with property taxes,
a business owner will take an equal or greater wallop.
