Morath announces intention to exempt school districts ravaged by Harvey from accountability
“I’m anticipating that a relatively large number of campuses from Corpus to the Louisiana border would be eligible for that,” Morath said
All students will be taking the state’s STAAR
assessments this year, but not all of those scores will
count toward school and district accountability, Commissioner Mike Morath
said today.
The Texas Education Agency has estimated
about 100,000 of Texas’ 5.4 million schoolchildren were displaced by Hurricane
Harvey last fall, within and across school districts. That led to some
active lobbying by the Houston Independent School District and
others to forego
testing.
The state and federally mandated testing, however,
started this week.
