Updated: Chairman Cook ready to take the reins of economic competitiveness committee

After the nastiness of the bathroom bill fight, Chair Cook tells QR "We simply cannot jeopardize the economic engine that has made Texas great for so many years”

Amid the simmering controversy over this year’s bathroom bill fight, Texas House Speaker Joe Straus on Thursday morning announced that a select committee will drill down on all aspects of economic competitiveness ranging from incentive programs to investment in public education to the variety of problems caused by discriminatory legislation.

The select committee, to be chaired by Rep. Byron Cook will also include Vice Chair Senfronia Thompson, Rep. Angie Chen Button, Rep. Sarah Davis, Rep. Charlie Geren, Rep. Joe Moody, and Rep. Rene Oliveira.

After selecting Cook to lead the committee, Straus said the chairman is “a strong leader, with a diverse business background who is committed to private-sector growth.” Cook “also understands the importance of bringing good jobs and highly skilled workers to every region of our state,” Straus said. “With Chairman Cook at the helm, I'm confident that the work of this committee will be thorough, innovative and helpful to the Texas economy."
