Hurricane Harvey could put a big hit on state funding of public education

For now, the initial cost to the system is estimated at $400 million, which is $250 million in new spending and $150 million that would not return to the state through recapture

Members of the House Public Education Committee were unhappy today that so few ISDs had bothered to call for mid-year re-appraisals in order to reduce local property tax bills.

For lawmakers from areas with significant flooding, like Chair Rep. Dan Huberty, R-Kingwood, it made no sense for people to pay a high tax bill for a home they could not occupy or a business that might not be re-opened for months.

But, to date, only Montgomery County, Fort Bend County, Katy ISD and Spring Branch ISD have called for new appraisals.
