Apparently responding to the speaker, Senate Finance puts the hammer down

Chair Nelson: “Our article work groups have been meeting day and night, looking for every opportunity for savings, to make recommendations on how to prioritize our limits resources, which, by the way, we should be doing anyway.”

Senate Finance is moving through its budget markup at break neck speed today, a clear response to Speaker of the House Joe Straus’ criticism of the Senate’s pace on the budget.

Chair Sen. Jane Nelson, R-Flower Mound, opened this morning’s budget session noting the progress the Senate has made on the budget: a budget filed the second week of the session; input from 167 agencies and 600 witnesses’ and special work groups on school finance, health care costs, juvenile justice and special items in higher education.

“Our article work groups have been meeting day and night, looking for every opportunity for savings, to make recommendations on how to prioritize our limits resources, which, by the way, we should be doing anyway,” Nelson said. “We have been moving tirelessly. We’re right on schedule. In fact, we’re ahead of schedule when compared to previous sessions.”
